Glenwood Springs or bust?! We busted!

So, we were headed on our 2nd Annual Gibson, Holland, Busch, Ravsten camping adventure yesterday morning.  As you can tell by the attached pictures, we had a fabulous first day.  Although the river was right at our feet and going by very swiftly and there was mud and an occasional rain shower; we were all happy and content to be with friends in a beautiful place.

The boys were perfect boys...muddy and filthy in about five minutes flat.  The girls were girls and had to visit everyone's tent before getting settled. We had a delicious dinner provided by the Holland's and FINALLY, it was "smarshmellow" time.  The moment my children waited for for about a week!  Oh what fun.

As darkness fell, I took the kids on an "animal" hunt.  We found coyotes, snakes, bears, wolves, bugs, birds, the moon, trains, rivers...oh we were on a grand adventure.  That is until Kedzie lost it, due to extreme fatigue.

This is where all the fun begins.  Oh wait, I did forget to mention that on a trip in the van to the bathroom, I may or may not have carefully reversed into a picnic table, very blocked from my view and missed a huge boulder by about 1/4 inch.  Yes, the tail-light is broken!

So, back to my story, Kedzie lost it and was sent to bed.  It was 10pm, so the boys went to bed too, quickly and quietly.  Then, the adults hung out by the fire for a while, just getting to the good stuff like Will Smith, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and many others...when the rain came tumbling down...hard!  Good nights were said quickly and we were dry in our beds.

Did I mention that we stayed at Glenwood Canyon Resort and we were right on the river?  On the other side of the river, is the railway!  Yes, the trains were awesome to see during the day, but the two loud and long freight carriers that came between midnight and three, were sounds of death to the untrained ear!  So, rains, trains...the kids slept through it all.

I did check on Alex around 3am and realized that he was out of his sleeping bag and soaked from the moisture coming up from the tarp and floor! So, I pulled him onto our air mattress.  Nice and cozy, until 5:30am when he started to choke...on his own throw up...Gross!

He got the mattress, the blanket, two sleeping bags, his pj's, Travis and his shirt, my pants and he tried to sleep through it all!

Thank  goodness there was a shower the he loved and then he fell back asleep in my arms and I enjoyed the river and the beautiful scenery, wondering what our day would look like.

We were served breakfast by Travis and his first assistant Perry.  Delish BTW.  I gave Alex a drink of water and he was off, once he woke up, playing with Matthew.  So, I thought the day was saved, until around 8:30am when he puked again. And, Ethan decided to not follow the "not climbing the mountain rule" and was defiant to Travis...We were packed and out of camp within 45minutes.  Three of the five of us crying as we left.  I was one of the three.

I was so looking forward to a beautiful, fun trip to the mountains with my family and wonderful friends.  I can happily say that I loved the first 20 hours.  Wish I was still there enjoying the next 48.  But, to no avail.  I had naughty kids and a sick baby.

Ironically, Alex hasn't thrown up since and acts just fine.  Kedzie threw up last week and Travis had the aches on Wednesday.  So, can't wait for Ethan and I to contract "the disease that ruined Glenwood!"

Anyway, on a positive note, it rained again here this afternoon, really hard and we are in our home, dry and warm.  We are also clean and so is all of our gear.  I'm really happy about that.  So, that's the bright side of it all.  And, our family is trying camping again in a few weeks.

So, Glenwood Springs...a bust!

It is so beautiful! Somehow camping seems to always be a bust for me. Maybe that is why I don't love it. The nice warm bed and dry kids sounds really good to me.

In my crabby old age I still can't believe our mother's took 10 girls to 4-H camp every year! Don't even think about asking me to sleep in a tent now!

At least you got some great pics before you had to come home. It still looks like it was great!! By the way, you can send Kedzie over and I will teach her how to ride a bike. I have also taught Mya and Peyton! I think I have finally found a talent. I think people will be impressed at church when we talk about talents and I can say, I teach kids to ride a 2 wheeler!!
