Black lives matter! They do. You must see color to understand someone just like to must see gender and personality. Terrible things are happening in this country, people of color are being mis treated and unrightfully so. There is a lot of back and forth going on from blaming the cops to blaming the black man to blaming the government to blaming the white people.
Here's what I know. My son matters. He is both white and black. His birth mom is white, his birth dad is black and he's being raised by a white family. His life matters. I had to share with all of my children that when they get pulled over by the police, they need to put their hands on the steering wheel and do what they're told. I had to tell all four of them, for Triston's sake. He told me that he is "neutral" in all of this. I hope things will be different when he's twenty, but apparently, not much as changed since the 60's and there is racial profiling and unfairness going on all of the time.
Triston was called the N word this past year by a 5th grader. The school took the comment and me seriously and taught the kids how inappropriate the word is, however I assume it is not the last time he hears that word just because of the color of his skin.
I've been reading and listening and watching and learning so that I can be prepared to be Triston's support as he gets older and the racism becomes more real for him.
