Monday we had our initial appointment at spine clinic of the Rockies, 45 minutes north of us in Ft. Collins and it went better than I'd expected. It was the first time since her diagnosis that I've had a sense of hope. I'm so grateful. The doc seemed so optimistic that we can stop her curve from getting worse. It's going to be a long road but we can do it! He said that he sees 100's of patients a year with scoliosis and has only lost three to surgery. Not that surgery is a bad option, but why do it if we don't have too! Anyway, he said that it is a crucial time right now because of her age and growing and the fact that her spine is starting to turn.
So, he was very promising.
In regards to treatment, she will be going on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each session lasts two hours. And she'll go for eighteen weeks, 35 sessions. So we plan on going until July or August. She will have to get out of school Mondays a half an hour early. And I'm finally grateful for early out of Wednesdays because she won't miss any school!
She has exercises at home and then they'll work her each time at the clinic to try and re-train her brain to grow her spine straight. It's hard for me to comprehend it all, but here we go.
Here she is doing one of her home exercises. Poor girl has to lay on some pillows and watch 30 minutes of tv each day. It did give her a headache, so we'll figure all that out in time.
I'm truly grateful for modern medicine and to be living in this modern age. This doctor has only been doing this treatment for seven years and it appears to be working. Another good thing is that we have a friend going there as well, so we'll be able to car pool. I've got Wednesdays! So, today will be her first day!
In other news...Travis took Ethan and Camden to a Nuggets game on Friday night. They had the best time ever. I'll be honest, Travis was bored, but the boys were so happy!
We've also started another season of soccer! Ethan's the middle red shirted kid. He's been with his team for four seasons already. They have the best coach and are such a good group of boys. It's so fun for him to go play each Saturday.
Alex has started his second season of soccer and he's the blonde on the left. His buddies Matthew (in the coat) and Colten (in the middle of the goal) are on the team as well. Mr. T is playing too. They were all counting down the days until their first game.
It's so much fun for me to watch!
Mr. T brought this home from preschool this week. Doesn't it touch your heart? It did mine.
And finally, Alex can ride a bike with no training wheels and it didn't take any time at all. It's all thanks to our balance bike that he's been using since he was one! I just took the wheels off, gave him a push and off he went. It's hard for him to pedal and steer at the same time, so we'll work on that, but I'm so proud of him and so grateful that it's not going to take hours of practicing! Good job Alex!
So, there you have our updates. Things are going well. Spring Break is next week. I have nothing planned yet, but I'm sure we'll be doing some fun things. Life is good and we are truly blessed in so many ways. It's very stressful, but Heavenly Father is providing the way. What a relief!
